What do you need to do to maintain your instrument between services!
Do you know how to oil your instrument?
Do you check to make sure the rods and screws are secure?
What does a proper service involve?
To maintain your instrument it should be services every 6 - 12 months depending usage.

Overhauls
Flute and clarinets on average need to be repadded about every 5 years. Pads absorb moisture from your breath and break down and become water logged.
Saxophone pads last a little longer (being made of leather) and are more water resistant.
Some pads deteriorate quicker than others depending on their location on the instrument.
